The dholak is a classic double-headed hand drum widely used in Indian folk, devotional, and classical music. Featuring a barrel-shaped wooden body and two drumheads (one for bass tones, the other for sharp treble notes), it produces a vibrant, rhythmic sound central to many musical traditions. The shell is typically made from well-seasoned sheesham (rosewood) or mango wood. The smaller drumhead is crafted from goat skin for higher-pitched notes, while the larger head is usually buffalo skin for lower, resonant pitches. The drum is rope-laced and tensioned using steel rings or tuning pegs, giving fine control over pitch and playability.
